Project SUMMER SCHOOL 2014 Report

The last week of July marked the beginning of the two-week Summer School by CIFSS, in collaboration with Manipal University. The Summer School boasted of an eclectic mix of 22 participants from across the globe, ranging from Harvard to IIT, Delhi.

Dr. D. K. Rana welcomed the gathering during the inauguration with the Course Directors – Prof. Arindam Chakrabarti, Director, University of Hawai’i, Honolulu and Prof. Shrinivasa Varakhedi, Registrar, Karnataka Sanskrit University, Bengaluru covering the objectives of the Summer School and outcomes of the programme. Prof. N. P. Unni, Chairman, CIFSS introduced the delegates to the Centre and its activities. Swami Advayananda, ?c?rya and President, CIF expressed gratitude to Manipal University, CIFSS and the course directors for conducting such an event; while Dr. Neeta Inamdar, Associate Professor and Head of the Department of European Studies (DES), Manipal University shared the journey of the Summer School from Manipal to Veliyanad.

This initiative was taken up to lay a foundation stone for younger generations, with the primary focus being academic discussions on the Indian philosophical schools, their conceptual and historical significance and relevance in our lives. Towards the end of the programme, the participants presented their learning from the Summer School.

Apart from the aforementioned dignitaries, the valedictory session was graced by Sri Srinivasa Kumar N ?c?rya, Assistant Professor, DES, Manipal University. Swamini Niranjanananda and Swami Sharadananda, ?c?ryas, CIF expressed their elation on how this remarkable event would lay the foundation stone for academic discussions on Indian philosophical schools and help the younger generation to understand its importance. The programme ended with a vote of thanks by Dr. V. Shivani and certificate distribution.

Each student carried home a signed copy of ‘The Path of Proofs: Pram??apaddhati of ?ri Jayat?rtha’, a standard textbook of Dvaita epistemology rendered into English by Prof. Shrinivasa Varakhedi and a yoga mat to continue practice at home. The programme received unequivocal feedback from the participants, stating the exercise to be amazingly educative and informative with the most scholarly ideas presented in an illustrative and lucid manner.
