Sri Jnaneshvar Maharaj the 13th Century Marathi Saint is credited with the authourship of this book. The text is a collection of 27 Abhangas (musical poems) which tirelessly bring to our attention the importance of naama-japa and the benefits we derive there from.
These Abhangas, contain instructions about the disciplines to be practiced by those treading this spiritual path.
In the text itself the saint declares that the text is meant for all those who are reveling in this samsara. He besieges the Sadhakas to immerse themselves in naama-japa sadhana, at once assuring them of the attainment of the Self.
For a Varkari (one who undertakes an annual pilgrimage to Pandharpur) the day is incomplete without the recitation of this text.
In the Bhagawat Sampradaya, this text is given the same status as the Vaidic Sandhya.
