Panchadashi, the renowned composition of Sri Bharati Tirtha and Swami Vidyaranya, is a compendium of 15 foundational treatises or prakarana-granthas. This epic work is a singular treatise on the entire philosophy of Advaita-vedanta. By providing the complete grasp of the essentials of Vedanta, Panchadashi elucidates the Upanishadic thoughts and by revealing the identity of the Self with the supreme Brahman thereby dispelling the ignorance of the Self.
In the fourth chapter, titled ‘Dvaita-viveka’, the author expounds the world of duality created by both Ishvara and jiva. This analysis or viveka enables the student to comprehend the scope of the realms pertaining to the Ishvara- and jiva-srishti. Also clarity arises as to where from bondage arises, which then provides the means for its destruction.
Swami Vidyaranya begins by explaining the nature of the realm of duality manifested by Ishvara, through citations from several Upanishads on creation. In each citation, a specific aspect of Ishvara’s creation is explained. This section concludes with the apparent entry of Ishvara as the jiva.
Next, the realm of duality pertaining to jiva is explained through the thoughts from the Saptanna -brahmana section of the Brihadaranyaka-upanishad. Answers to questions such as, “What is the nature of jiva’s realm of duality?” and “How does jiva become a creator of the various objects for enjoyment?” are explained in detail.
The text thereafter proceeds to an inquiry into jiva’s cognition of Ishvara's realm of duality and ascertains the nature of bondage. It is methodically shown that the cognition of Ishvara’s duality as it is is never possible, for what one perceives is always an image of the external world. Indeed, there is no bondage caused by Ishvara’s realm of duality, but it is the mind alone that is the cause of bondage. The views of the Yoga and Vijnanavada schools on the nature of bondage and the solutions provided by them to end bondage are also analysed and refuted.
In the final section, the author deals with the subcategories of jiva-srishti, explaining how and at what point of spiritual evolution they are to be overcome. The sadhanas that are to be undertaken for putting an end to the negative aspects of jiva-srishti are also enumerated for one to effortlessly abide in the supreme Brahman.
A total of 28 video sessions by Swami Advayananda , divided into 8 lessons, covering the entire fourth chapter, are made available to the registered students.
What You will Learn
Why should I do this Course?
Each chapter of Panchadashi is an independent topical text. One need not complete the earlier chapter to proceed to the next. Each chapter adapts a different methodology to reveal the same Truth.
The fourth chapter, titled ‘Dvaita-viveka’, uses the methodology of analysis of Ishvara’s and jiva’s realms of duality and guides the seeker on the means available to put an end to bondage.
The text points out that Ishvara’s creation is rather an assistance to Liberation and never a source of bondage, unlike the common but erroneous notion that Ishvara is the cause of the jiva’s bondage. Indeed, all problems and their solutions lie within jiva-srishti and thus within the grasp of Ishvara. When all these are rightly understood by a thorough analysis of this chapter, one employs jiva-srishti and aided by Ishvara-srishti (Guru and Shastras) arrives, for sure, at the very portals of Liberation!
