More about this Event

Here’s an opportunity to make your birthday/anniversary (or that of a dear one) a blessed celebration.

I. Invoking blessings through Pujas and Havans: By offering worship through pujas and havans, we express our devotion and seek the blessings of the Almighty.

  1. Ayushya Havan is performed to invoke the blessings of the Ayurdevata for good health and positivity and shield one against all ailments. Lord Ayurdevata, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu – the divine physician of all the three worlds, is the chief deity of the havan. One who performs the Ayushya Havan will be blessed with a healthy, long and fulfilling life.

  1. Mrityunjaya Havan is performed with the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra, one of the most powerful mantras in the repertoire of Vedic incantations. Translated literally as the Great Victory over Death, this short but potent prayer is known to confer many corporeal benefits, including good health and long life. The Mrityunjaya Havan is to invoke Lord Shiva, offer one’s gratitude and seek His grace to bestow health and courage to face all situations in life.

The pujas and havan will be performed on your behalf at the sacred sanctum of the Swayambhu Ayyappa Temple in Adi Sankara Nilayam.

II. Bhiksha: ‘Annadanam Mahadanam – Offering of food is the greatest of offerings’ is a famous Sanskrit adage.  In the Indian tradition, offering bhiksha (food) to Sannyasins, Brahmacharins and Antevasins (ashram residents and sevaks) is considered one of the foremost duties and privileges of a householder – a blessing equivalent to offering food for the entire universe. By offering Bhiksha to the residents of the ashram, one retains the age-old tradition of Hinduism and at the same time fulfils one’s own grahasta-dharma (duty of the householder). As part of the special Birthday Blessing you can partake of the joy of giving by offering Bhiksha for breakfast or lunch or the whole day.

III. Chuttu vilakku or lighting 1008 oil lamps around the Swayambhu Ayyappa Temple is an auspicious offering to Lord Ayyappa to overcome all difficulties, bring prosperity and peace to the individual, one’s home and the world at large. Light is the very symbol of life itself and represents also Knowledge or Consciousness. The Lord is the very ‘Knowledge Principle’ (Chaitanya) – the source, the enlivener and the illuminator of all knowledge. Each lamp lit with reverence is an offering of gratitude to that Consciousness which illumines all.
