Bhagavad Gita, the Divine Song of the Lord, is a complete repository of distilled Upanishadic wisdom composed by the poet-Seer Bhagavan Veda Vyasa, occuring in the Bhishma Parva of the Mahabharata.
Divided into 18 chapters, with 700 verses, it essentially contains teachings on Brahma-vidya – the Knowledge of the highest Reality, and Yoga shastra – the application of this Knowledge in life. It is truly a hand-book of instructions as to how every human being can come to live the subtle philosophical principles of Vedanta in the actual work-a-day world.
The Dhyana Sloka or Prayer in Meditation, consisting of nine verses, is a stand-alone praise of Bhagavad Gita composed, it is said, most likely by the renowned philosopher Sri Madhusudana Sarasvati. The nine verses reverentially offer salutations to: the text, the Divine Mother Gita herself, Veda Vyasa – the composer, Sri Krishna –the supreme Lord. The prayer further expounds on the power of divine assistance.
It is customary to recite the Dhyana Sloka before starting the daily study of Bhagavad Gita.
