Bhaja Govindam, also known as Moha Mudgara, is a composition by Jagadguru Sri Adi Shankaracharya and a group of his disciples. Moha Mudgara literally translates to ‘the remover of all delusions’ and aptly so, for this is not just a devotional offering to the Lord. Bhaja Govindam is a ready reckoner for the seeker with fresh ideas to align themselves and help them walk the path straight to their goal!
“Seek Govind, Seek Govind, Seek Govind O Fool! When the appointed time comes (death), grammar-rules surely will not save you.”
The verses of Bhaja Govindam use the above refrain at the end of every verse. This refrain, repeated after each verse in the Bhaja Govindam, is not meant to insult or to belittle the student, but out of compassion towards the old seeker who even in his last moments is mugging up rules of grammar. In fact, observing the callousness with which people handle life, Acharya Shankara burst forth into thirteen hard hitting verses. Inspired by their Acharya’s spontaneity the fourteen disciples, accompanying him, too added a verse each to this beautiful composition. Acharya Shankara hits hard attempting to knock sense into people living false lives with their false notions, sounding out the urgency to seek the Higher. Hence the text is also called ‘Moha Mudgara’ – one that hammers delusions and thus shatters illusions hoarded by us over lifetimes.
The text not only indicates to the students the goal and the path, but also reveals the wretchedness of one’s present way of life, the horrors of his present values of life and the dire consequences that await him, if he continues to pursue the path of ego and desire. Through the text, the Acharya reveals our present state of existence, and its hollowness and limitations. All aspects of life, whether they be objects, money or beings, are referred to and their limited nature is presented as it is.
