Sacred Chants of Health and Harmony

The Atharvaveda is one of the four Vedas and is one of the oldest texts in the world. Comprising 598 suktas organised into 20 sections known as kandas, the Atharvaveda encompasses an extraordinary range of subjects.

Its scope extends from descriptions of diseases and their treatment through medicines and sacred amulets, to reflections on philosophy, agriculture, architecture and protective rites. Particularly profound are the hymns dedicated to medicinal plants – addressing both preventive care and curative healing – which reveal a deep and reflective understanding of health.

The suktas discuss a wide spectrum of ailments affecting different parts of the body, chronic disorders, venomous bites and stings from snakes and insects, along with methods of treatment using herbal remedies, mantras and protective amulets.

For the Vedic seers, the ideal was not merely survival, but the attainment of a full and healthy lifespan – a hundred years of happy and contented life.
