Dharmashastra is a genre of Sanskrit texts that refer to the treatises on Dharma. It comprises law and rules of conduct of the people of different categories in ancient and medieval India and had its origin in the Dharmasutras which formed the part of Vedanga-kalpasutra. The later works on Dharmashastra such as the law books (Smrti) of Manu, followed by the Yajnavalkya and others, all belonging to the early period of the Christian era, are some of the extant popular law books which codify the laws and duties. They are the continuation and further development on the secular side of the earlier Dharmasutras. There are also a large number of digests on law which are highly valuable and authoritative.
This webinar presents a short history of this literature, epitomises its contents and importance, sheds light on its style and relevance of its study as they are the fountainhead of Indian Law.
