Kamba Ramayanam, also known as Ramavataram, is a 12th-century Tamil epic poem composed by the poet Kambar. It is a retelling of the Sanskrit Ramayana by Valmiki, but Kambar’s version is renowned for its poetic brilliance, cultural depth, and spiritual insights unique to Tamil literature.
Divine Portrayal of Rama: Kambar emphasizes Rama’s divinity, portraying him consistently as an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, aligning with the Bhakti movement’s devotional themes.
Poetic Excellence: The epic is celebrated for its intricate use of Tamil poetic forms, rich metaphors, and emotional depth, making it a cornerstone of Tamil literature.
Cultural Integration: Kambar weaves Tamil cultural elements and folklore into the narrative, providing a localized flavor to the universal story.
Bala Kandam sets the stage for Rama’s divine life—covering his birth, growth, early heroic acts, and marriage to Sita. Kambar amplifies emotional and devotional elements, introduces fresh poetic scenes, and stretches childhood moments with deep artistry.
