Mandukya_sw_adv_v2

With just 12 mantras, the Mandukya Upanishad is the shortest among the principal Upanishads, yet it encapsulates the very essence of all Upanishadic wisdom. It explores the full spectrum of human experience through the three states of Consciousness – waking (jagrat), dream (svapna), and deep sleep (sushupti) – that are common to every living being. The Self (Atman), which shines through all these states, is revealed as ‘Turiya’ – transcendental, immanent, non-dual (advaita), and attributeless (nirguna).

A unique feature of this Upanishad is its method of guiding seekers to the Truth through Omkara upasana, the contemplation on the syllable ‘Om’. By reflecting on its three sounds – A, U, and M – the seeker is led beyond them into the silence that represents the ultimate Reality. Thus, the sages have rightly declared: Mandukyam ekam eva alam mumukshunam vimuktaye – for a sincere aspirant of Liberation, the Mandukya alone is sufficient.

Belonging to the Atharva Veda, the Mandukya is also celebrated for its Mahavakya “Ayam Atma Brahma – This Self is Brahman – one of the four great declarations of Vedanta. Its vision dissolves the distinction between individuality and totality, showing how the microcosm and macrocosm are one, revealed through the waking, dream, and deep sleep states, and culminating in the recognition of pure Consciousness.
