This course aims at introducing Nirukta, the first ever treatise on the science of etymology composed by Yaskacharya. Nirukta focuses on the derivation of words for better understanding, often splitting them into syllabic segments to reveal their origins. It consists of 12 chapters divided into three sections – Synonyms (Chapters 1–3), Homonyms (Chapters 4–6) and names of deities (Chapters 7–12), with Chapters 13 and 14 forming the appendix.
The fundamental concept underlying this text is that every word is derived from a verb. To establish this, Yaskacharya presents five principles of derivation: adding a syllable, transporting a syllable, modifying a syllable, deleting a syllable and attaching extended meaning to a verb. With its analytical observations, Nirukta is a unique and insightful work that illuminates divergent areas of ancient Indian linguistic thought.
A total of 6 video lectures by Prof. Gauri Mahulikar are made available to the registered students. The lectures will cover Chapter 1 of Nirukta, offering a holistic study of Yaskacharya’s methodology and significance of his work in Vedic interpretation.
