The Bliss of Yoga
Panchadasi is a profound Advaita Vedanta work composed by Swami Vidyaranya, a luminous teacher in the lineage of Sri Adi Sankara. Through its fifteen chapters, the text unfolds the vision of non-duality with remarkable clarity, guiding the seeker from intellectual understanding to direct recognition of the Self and steady abidance in Brahman.
Chapter 11 of the Panchadasi focuses on Brahmananda – the supreme Bliss, that is one’s true nature. Swami Vidyaranya explains that while we usually chase happiness in the external world, true joy is actually the inherent nature of the Self. He categorises bliss into three layers: Brahmananda (the infinite original), Vidyananda (joy from self-knowledge), and Visayananda (the brief reflection of joy found in worldly objects).
The Chapter uses deep sleep as a primary proof of this reality. In dreamless sleep, though we have no objects, thoughts, or ego, we still experience a profound peace. This proves that bliss does not depend on external things – it is what remains when the mind is still. By realising that worldly pleasures are just ‘tiny fragments’ of one’s own inner ocean of Bliss, one can stop chasing shadows and turn inward.
To reach this state, the text integrates yoga as a practical method. By stilling the mind’s agitations, we clear the ‘mental mirror’ so that it can reflect the light of Brahman without distortion. Ultimately, Swami Vidyaranya teaches that Liberation is the recognition that you are not the seeker of happiness, but the very source of it.
