Sense organs and sense objects
Verse 14: Bhashyam: That by which something is measured – sound etc. is Matra. Beginning with the sense of hearing, the sense of touch – when they join well with sound and feeling, the experiences of cold and heat, joy and sorrow are produced. They give out the feelings of cold and heat, joy and sorrow.
The five objects of the senses, beginning from sound, are grasped by the sense organs. Their contact alone produces heat and cold, joy and sorrow.
The sensation of cold can be joyful sometimes and sorrowful sometimes. In the same way is the experience of heat. There is no order to it. Joy and sorrow do not change. Hence among the two, cold and heat have been mentioned.
Since the sense organ of feeling comes in contact with the object of touch, they are of the nature of coming and going – therefore not eternal. So put up with the likes of cold and heat. Endure them. That one should not indulge in exhilaration and grief on account of the two emotions, is implied here.
Now, what becomes of the person who puts up with cold and heat and other dualities? Listen to that Arjuna!

That human who has an even mind when he receives joy – he does not get exhilarated and when he is sorrowful, he does not grieve, that intelligent being does not get disturbed, does not get shaken as he has had the vision of the eternal Atman. He is untouched by the changes in heat and cold of the environment and other experiences..
The one who is established in the eternity of the Atman and is able to tolerate or endure dualities becomes ready for immortality, the experience of immortality. He becomes fit for liberation.
For this reason, without giving expression to sorrow and grief, it is proper to endure cold and heat because…(…continues in next post).
