ABOUT THE RETREAT

Bhagavad Gita Immersive: Gita Sugita Kartavya is a seven‑week residential Bhagavad Gita Intensive led by Swami Advayananda, to be held from 1 June to 18 July 2027 at Adi Sankara Nilayam, the hallowed abode of Chinmaya International Foundation (CIF) in Veliyanad, Ernakulam District, Kerala. This immersive study retreat will cover the entire Bhagavad Gita, enabling participants to engage with its message in a sustained and systematic manner.

Adi Sankara Nilayam – the ancestral maternal birth home of Sri Adi Sankara, nestled amidst lush greenery, temple shrines and ponds – provides an ideal ambience for deep study, reflection and inner transformation. As the research and academic centre of Chinmaya Mission, CIF is dedicated to the preservation and dissemination of Advaita Vedanta and Sanskrit, making it a natural home for such an in‑depth Gita sadhana.

Under the guidance of Swami Advayananda, the participants will be led through a verse‑by‑verse exploration of all 18 chapters of the Bhagavad Gita guided by the traditional commentaries such as that of Sri Adi Sankaracharya, Sri Madhusudana Saraswati, Nilakantha, Sankarananda, Sridhara Swamin and so on, as well as the exemplary modern commentary of Gurudev Swami Chinmayananda.

The Immersive is conceived not merely as an academic course but as a living engagement with the text, where the teachings are reflected upon in the light of one’s own life and challenges, and one lives and breathes the teachings of Lord Sri Krishna.

Each day will feature three structured study sessions focusing on chanting, meaning and commentary, supported by supplementary sessions such as guided meditation, group discussions, dedicated time for self‑study and quiet contemplation, and doubt‑clarification sessions. This rhythm allows the teachings to be heard, reflected upon and internalised, in line with the traditional three‑step approach of shravana, manana and nididhyasana.

The Immersive will culminate on the auspicious occasion of Guru Purnima, offering participants a sacred opportunity to express gratitude to the Guru‑parampara and to renew their commitment to living the vision of the Bhagavad Gita. In the sanctified presence of Adi Sankara Nilayam and with the inspiring guidance of Swami Advayananda, Gita Sugita Immersive invites sincere seekers and students to rediscover, rejoice in and resolutely live the wisdom of the Gita.

SIGNIFICANCE OF STUDYING THE BHAGAVAD GITA

Bhagavad Gita is a timeless dialogue between Lord Sri Krishna and Arjuna on the battlefield of Kurukshetra, where the outer war mirrors the inner conflicts of the human mind. Comprising 18 chapters and 700 verses, it distils the essence of the Upanishadic vision into a practical guide for right living, right thinking and right understanding.

At its heart, the Gita addresses the fundamental human crisis: confusion about one’s identity, duty (dharma), purpose of life and the right way to live. Arjuna’s despondency at the start of the text symbolises the paralysis that arises when values, relationships and responsibilities collide. It shows how all problems emanate ultimately from the ignorance of one’s true nature, and how solutions naturally surface when we rediscover who we really are. Through the Song Divine, Lord Krishna rehabilitates Arjuna’s shattered personality, restoring clarity, strength and commitment to righteous action; thus the Gita becomes a manual for transforming weakness into inner strength and despair into dynamic engagement.

The Gita harmoniously integrates the paths of Karma Yoga (the yoga of selfless action), Bhakti Yoga (the yoga of devotion) and Jnana Yoga (the yoga of knowledge), showing that a balanced spiritual life embraces work, worship and wisdom together. It teaches the spirit of nishkama-karma – acting wholeheartedly without attachment to results – and extols equanimity in the midst of life’s dualities, encapsulated in the vision “samatvam yoga ucyate – equanimity is called Yoga.” In a world marked by stress, competition and uncertainty, this vision becomes a powerful antidote to inner turmoil.

Pujya Gurudev Swami Chinmayananda often spoke of the Bhagavad Gita as a “handbook of life” or “manual of life” and emphasised its role in revitalising individuals and society through right understanding and right living. He highlighted that the Gita offers not an escape from life, but a way to face and transform life’s challenges with wisdom, courage and compassion, making it especially relevant for modern seekers and for the spiritual and cultural revival of society. Such was his devoted dissemination of the knowledge of the Bhagavad Gita all through his life that he is considered the Gitacharya of our times.

To study the Gita in a focused and sustained manner, in the traditional gurukula setting of Adi Sankara Nilayam, is therefore a sacred opportunity. It allows the seeker to listen to the Lord’s message in an environment charged with scriptural study, contemplation and the living presence of the guru‑sishya parampara. Immersion in such study and contemplation helps internalise the Gita’s call to rise above inertia and fear and to live a life of purposeful action, abiding devotion and inner freedom.
