Subramanian
ParticipantNamaskaram , can someone let me know the clear difference or how to distinguish between a Mantra, Stotram, Slokam and Sutra?
In other words, suppose I see a couple of lines of text, is there a way to know if I am learning/reading a mantra/stotra/sloka/sutra assuming it is one of the four?
Thank you! -

KeymasterHari Om.
A mantra is usually referred to something which is Vedic (Sruti). Stuti can be smriti and is usually in praise of Gods. Sloka is usually refered to verses that are non Vedic. A sutra is a line which is very brief which when explained has a lot of content but is expressed in very few words.
