What might have otherwise been a seemingly casual encounter between a wise Master and an abhorable Chandala on the banks of the Ganges in the narrow lanes of Kashi, led to the setting of a masterpiece of the quintessence of the Upanishadic wisdom: Manisha Panchakam – a spontaneous expression of Sri Adi Sankaracharya’s conviction in just five verses. 

The wisdom coming from unexpected quarters and its stunning effect of transporting the great Sankaracharya to the higher realms of Consciousness is indeed a marvel. Manisha Panchakam is an  extempore composition explaining the four Mahavakyas in brief and describing the glory of the Guru, who is not the knower of Brahman but indeed Brahman alone. Sri Sankaracharya describes that such a person is his Guru irrespective of that person’s origin, caste, creed, nationality, status and so on.

About the Facilitator

Sri Anant Sarma has been associated with Chinmaya Mission for more than four decades. An engineer from IIT Madras, he went to the USA for further studies. His work experience covers both academia and industry in engineering and finance administration.
