Vakya-vritti, a Vedantic text composed by Sri Adi Sankaracharya, offers a detailed exposition on one of the four great Mahavakyas “Tat Tvam Asi”.
Vakya-vritti, based on the important Upanishadic statement “Tat Tvam Asi,” which means “Thou art That,” expounds that one’s true self is not different from the Supreme Reality, Brahman.
The text contains 53 verses and is presented as a conversation between a Guru (teacher) and a shishya (student).
It begins with the student seeking the means to cross the ocean of transmigration, and the teacher’s detailed and thoughtful answers make up the rest of the text. Step by step, the teacher explains the deeper meaning of the words ‘Tat’ and ‘Tvam’, and how they are actually one and the same. The text helps us understand the true nature of the Self as the witnessing presence and as pure existence, awareness, and joy. Studying this, one gains the knowledge that leads to liberation, freedom from sorrow and the discovery of lasting peace and completeness within oneself.
