Exploring the Vedic vision of life from conception to birth and beyond

The Atharvaveda, one of the ancient Vedic texts, is divided into 20 sections called Kandas, and contains Suktas belonging to diverse genres. These include hymns to deities, medicinal and philosophical hymns, verses concerning kings and their duties, and hymns addressing various stages of human life.

Among these, are Suktas concerned with the journey of a child from conception, stability and development of embryo and the samskaras associated with pregnancy, culminating in safe and auspicious childbirth.

This webinar will explore six Suktas from the Atharvaveda and one from the Rigveda. The Vedic worldview presents conception as a harmonious union of rta, cosmic order, prayer, fertility and divine grace. Conception is not viewed merely as a biological event, but as a Yajna – a sacred offering into the womb.

The selected Suktas offer insights into stability and development of embry, the overall wellbeing of the mother and child, nourishment and a conducive environment during pregnancy. The sessions will also examine references to plants such as apamarga (achyranthes aspera), invoked in Atharvavedic healing traditions to address disease and harmful influences.

Protective practices associated with pregnancy, including rituals, chanting of Vedic mantras and the use of amulets, will be explored in their textual and cultural context. The invocation of deities for protection, easy labour, smooth delivery and the safe birth of the child offers a fascinating glimpse into the Vedic understanding of this sacred stage of life.
