SararthadipikA, Commentary on AbhijnAna-shAkuntalam
Sārārthadīpikā, a significant Sanskrit commentary on Kālidāsa’s Abhijñānaśākuntalam, was composed in 1089 of the Malayalam Era (1913 CE) by H. H. Rāma Varma Parīkṣit Tampuran of the Cochin royal family in collaboration with Sahṛdayatilaka Paṇḍitarāja K. Rāma Piṣāroti. The title, meaning “a lamp illuminating the essential meaning,” aptly reflects its purpose of elucidating the deeper linguistic, literary, and aesthetic dimensions of Kālidāsa’s poetry. The commentary extends beyond grammatical and lexical explanations to examine the principles of Sanskrit poetics, including rasa, alaṅkāra, dhvani, imagery, and poetic expression, while also tracing the emotional development of the drama, particularly the love, separation, sorrow, remembrance, and eventual reunion of Duṣyanta and Śakuntalā. It further explores the philosophical dimensions of the play and has been regarded in modern scholarship as offering an Advaita-oriented interpretation. By integrating textual analysis with aesthetic, literary, and philosophical interpretation, Sārārthadīpikā provides a comprehensive framework for understanding the multiple layers of meaning in Abhijñānaśākuntalam and exemplifies the richness of the Sanskrit interpretative tradition in Kerala.
