GuestPravṛtti-marga is being extroverted and immersed in the outside world. Such a person has strong desires and he engages in action to fulfill his desires. He believes that the result of action is going to give him happiness. He is ever engaged in niyata and kamya karmas, there is no role of spirituality in his life.
As he matures intellectually, he realises that action does not always succeed and bring happiness. Gradually kamya karma is given up and slowly he starts doing his duties without any expectation of results.
In time this leads to doing his duties in an attitude of karma-yoga, which entails dedicating all action to the Lord and taking results of action, whether success or failure, as prasada. This attitude leads to reduction of raga-dvesha resulting in purification of mind.
A purified mind makes him a jignasu and in time a mumukshu and he turns introverted into nivṛtti-marga. Thus, karma-yoga can be said to be a bridge between the two margas.
Q2. What is meant by killing the Self and what is its result? Why are asura-loka said to be in blinding darkness?
‘Killing the Self’ is just a manner of speaking, since Self is changeless and infinite. Upanisad uses the expression for people who do not recognise the Self which illuminates our body-mind complex and is the real ‘I’. They have strong identification with BMI and this veils the presence of the Self. While in the human embodiment, they are involved with the external world and are only engaged in pampering the ‘karya-karan-sanghata’. As a result, when prarabdha karma is exhausted and jiva gives up the body, it go to any of the lokas-some higher and some lower lokas- but all being called asura-lokahere. The jiva again takes the embodiment in any of the yoni, based on karma which has fructified. And thus samsara continues for the jiva.
Asura loka is said to be in blinding darkness, since apart from human embodiment, all embodiments are only for bhoga – experiences and not for karma – actio. There is no possibility in any of these embodiments to progress spiritually and gain liberation. They will have to necessarily be in the ‘sorry-go-round’ of birth and death.
