Based on my understanding (please confirm with your teacher), Vedantas are much earlier than Raja Yoga that was formalized around 600BC by Patanjali. As to what people are suited for it, The Gita mentions it in Chapter 6, Dhyana Yoga. One who practices moderation in life – appropriate food, appropriate sleep, appropriate entertainment, appropriate work. The Gita 6.16 and 6.17

For anyone reading/reviewing this. I found the answer to this in the notes. It is the jiva (mind-intellect) that achieves Self-realization.

DISCLAIMER: I am speaking from my understanding of The Gita and not this Advanced Vedanta. Please check with your instructor(s)

In the Gita there is a pathway of emotion that traces the rise of anger (within oneself):

Attention and Values –> Attachment –> Desire –> Action. Based on the outcome from action, one could feel anger, greed, envy, pride etc.

Again, The Gita, says that it is easier to arrest this pathway earlier than in later stages; the effort required increases as one goes farther down the chain. Hope that helps.
