Brahma Vidya or self-realisation requires four important qualifications for an aspirant – Viveka, Vairagya, Shamadi Shakta Sampatti and Mumukshutvam. Of these, the most difficult to gain is vairagya. Bhartrihari, a great poet and the elder brother of King Vikramaditya of Ujjain, has poetically expounded ‘Vairagya’ in his text titled Vairagya Shatakam through 100 verses. A more comprehensive study of the subject of vairagya cannot be found in any other text. Vairagya is examined here through ten distinct aspects starting from spawning of desire, its nature, the power of desire, hurdles on the control of mind, role of Bhakti in gaining vairagya and the nature of highest vairagya in an Avadhuta.
