Withdrawn like a tortoise

Verse 2.57:

यः सर्वत्रानभिस्नेहस्तत्तत् प्राप्य शुभाशुभम्।
नाभिनन्दति न द्वेष्टि तस्य प्रज्ञा प्रतिष्ठिता॥

yaḥ sarvatrānabhisnehas tat tat prāpya śubhāśubham|
nābhinandati na dveṣṭi tasya prajñā pratiṣṭhitā||

That Muni with regard to the physical body and life at all times is without any attachment whenever he gains that which is auspicious or inauspicious, he gets neither excited nor hateful. When he gets something that makes him feel good, he does not have excessive happiness and does not become hateful when something he does not like happens. This is the meaning.
For such a person who is free from excitement and sorrow, his intellect becomes established in the truth.

Verse 2.58:

यदा संहरते चायं कूर्मोऽङ्गानीव सर्वशः।
इन्द्रियाणीन्द्रियार्थेभ्यस्तस्य प्रज्ञा प्रतिष्ठिता॥

yadā saṃharate cāyaṃ kūrmo’ṅgānīva sarvaśaḥ|
indriyāṇīndriyārthebhyas tasya prajñā pratiṣṭhitā||

Furthermore, the Sanuaso who is established in knowledge withdraws his senses competely. This is like a tortoise which out of fear withdraws its limbs. In the same way one whose mind is established withdraws all his sense organs from the sense objects. Such a person’s intellect is established in the Truth. This is the meaning of the words said.
Avatarika: Introduction to the next verse. For the diseased person too, the sense organs are withdrawn like a tortoise but the sanyasi does not have desire for the object from which he is withdrawing. How does he withdraw? It is said…
