Home > Blog > Sankara Bhashya–Part 23

No shake when all shakes

Verse 2.55:

श्री भगवानुवाच
प्रजहाति यदा कामान् सर्वान् पार्थ मनोगतान्।
आत्मन्येवात्मना तुष्टः स्थितप्रज्ञस्तदोच्यते॥

śrī-bhagavān uvāca
prajahāti yadā kāmān sarvān pārtha mano-gatān|
ātmany evātmanā tuṣṭaḥ sthita-prajñas tadocyate||

Shri Bhagavan says, when the person clealy gives up completely all desires, all the different choices and all desires that have entered into the mind, at that time, when all desires have been completely given up as there is no cause for contentment from without, with only those actions meant to preserve the body remaining, it may seem that the person’s conduct is crazy or as if he is mad. So it is said, without holding on to any gains from outside, the person is content with the Self in its own true nature of being. His gain is the immortal juice of the vision of the supreme Self. Put in other words, a man of steady wisdom is one with the experience of contentment. That vision is born out of the discrimination between the Self and the Not-Self. That person is called a man of steady wisdom or a wise person.

A man of steady wisdom means the renunciate who has left his desires for maintaining a relationship with children, wealth and the world and blissful in the experience of the Self.

Verse 2.56:

दुःखेष्वनुद्विग्नमनाः सुखेषु विगतस्पृहः।
वीतरागभयक्रोधः स्थितधीर्मुनिरुच्यते॥

duḥkheṣv-anudvigna-manāḥ sukheṣu vigata-spṛhaḥ|
vīta-rāga-bhaya-krodhaḥ sthita-dhīr munir ucyate||

When such a person experiences sorrow of three types such as caused by phenomenal forces, from other beings and from one’s own body and mind in the form of unpleasant sensations, emotions and experiences, his mind does not get triggered with high amplitude oscillation.

In the same way, when he experiences joy too, there is no craving for more. Just as more firewood stoked into fire makes the fire burn brighter and bigger, he is free of attachment to joys and hence they do not have the power to flare up his mind into intense craving, Such a person is called as the one free of attachment. He is free of attachment, fear and anger. That person’s intellect is steady. Such a contemplative one is called a renunciate only then.
Avatarika: Introduction to the next verse: Furthermore…(..to be continued).
